Safety issues of nuclear power generation after the Fukushima accident and lack of reliable nuclear fuel cycle technology make nuclear future very unclear in Japan. Integral Fast Reactor (IFR) and Pyroprocessing, built and experimented as EBR2 in the Argonne National Laboratory in the US may offer a possible option for Japan. Japan has participated in development of the IFR in 1990’s but knowledge was shared by very limited number of experts and none of Japanese public are aware of the existence of this technology. Recent movie, “Pandora’s Promise” directed by Robert Stone has revealed that IFR and Pyroprocessing may be a key technology to simultaneously respond to four challenges of 1) safer and proliferation resistant nuclear power, 2) global sustainability, 3) economic growth and 4) energy security. This symposium offers the opportunity for Japanese audience to know what is IFR and to think about the alternative options of next generation reactors and nuclear fuel cycle for the post Fukushima era.
