5.Plan Purpose
Chile and Japan are on opposite sides of the Pacific Ocean and they both have long coastlines. They share common problems such as management and utilization of marine biology resources, countermeasures to tsunami disasters, and promotion of renewable energy. In this seminar, we use the research facilities (with overnight accommodations) at the Catholic University of Chile, conduct an overnight training program with graduate students from the University of Chile and the Catholic University of Chile, and implement PBL (Problem Based Learning) with group work aimed at resolving these problems. Prior to the program, both the Chilean and Japanese sides will provide the necessary lectures to students.
In the group work, we plan to solve problems by mobilizing marine source development theory, fisheries science, development economics, and public policy studies, and we plan to conduct interdisciplinary learning. Additionally, by experiencing international team work on real social problems in Chile’s coastal communities, students can gain experience so they can appropriately navigate in future sites of regional development.

6.Expenses, etc.
In accordance with GSDM regulations, the university will be responsible for transportation expenses, accommodation expenses, and basic food expenses at the location. Other personal expenses will be the responsibility of participants themselves.

7.Other
The host institutions in Chile also permit long-term visits. It is possible to negotiate a separate long-term stay as a result of this seminar.

Students wishing to participate should inform the GSDM_SE Office by email before January 16 (Monday) at 5:00 p.m. In a written description no longer than one A4-size paper, explain in English how you think you can contribute to the group work and send it to the office. Participants will be determined after interviews are held for all applicants. Note that only participants who can participate in the whole trip will be selected (arriving or leaving in the middle are not permitted.) As a rule, once accepted as a participant, cancellations are not allowed (if you must cancel, you will be responsible for a cancellation fee.)
