GSDM 55th Platform Seminar
“Toward Real Fusion between Medical Science and Information Science: Opportunity and Issues of Carrier Paths on Transdisciplinary Research”4th Apr, 2015 13:00-18:00 (Ito Hall , Ito International Research Center, Hongo Campus of the University of Tokyo)
The advance of molecular biology in the late 20th century brought theoretical understandings of biological systems based on genome and the era of medical big data has begun thanks to the next generation sequencers and omics analysis technologies. The biological phenomena are complex, and it has been considered difficult to understand these by simply decomposing them into a number of constituent molecules and elementary processes. Data Science now provides methods to analyze complex biological phenomena as a whole system, elucidate the correlations between a number of factors involved, and find paths to control them. It also enables us to quickly estimate mutations associated with diseases through collection of personal genome, and its clinical application is gaining momentum.
In this seminar, researchers in genomic science from the University of Tokyo, IT, NGS and pharmaceutical companies provide their views on the fusion between medical science and information science, research, human resource development and career path.
