(Daiwa Ubiquitous Ishibashi Nobuo Memorial Hall, Daiwa Ubiquitous Computing Research Building, Hongo Campus, the University of Tokyo)

2019/08/29

The Korean Peninsula landscape is undergoing a rapid transformation, due to changes in strategy in respect of the DPRK’s nuclear and missile development on the part of both the DPRK itself and other countries concerned. The DPRK has shifted its strategy from the previous line of parallel economic construction and nuclear arms development to a path focused intensively on economic construction. Over the recent year and a half, Chairman Kim Jong-un of the DPRK has held several summits with President Xi Jinping of China, President Moon Jae-in of the ROK, President Donald Trump of the US, and President Vladimir Putin of Russia. The two recent summits between Kim and Trump, held in Hanoi in February and in Panmunjom at the Korean Demilitarized Zone in June, gave expectations that the DPRK would step into a denuclearization process and that efforts at regional economic cooperation and economic integration in NEA would be would be strengthened, which however resulted in disappointments. In this seminar, taking into these developments in the recent years, experts from Japan, China, the ROK and Russia will evaluate current situations and explore future prospects of the Korean Peninsula from the perspectives of their respective countries.
