Spain’s Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan 2021-2030 (PNIEC) outlines ambitious plans for the decarbonization and modernization of the economy in line with EU climate goals. The PNIEC foresees a 20% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, with a 42% use of renewables for the final use of energy (a 74% and 100% for the power sector by 2030 and 2050 respectively).
EU member states are coordinating their national energy and climate plans together with the European Commission. Final versions are expected to be submitted by the end of 2019. According to an independent evaluation of the current drafts by the European Climate Foundation, Spain and France lead the way with 52% and 47%, respectively, followed by Greece (44%) and Sweden (43%).
Mr. Hugo Lucas Porta will introduce the main characteristics and strategies of the PNIEC together with the challenges for its implementation. He is the Head of the Regulatory Frameworks and Corporate Strategy at the Energy Transition Department of the Institute for the Diversification and Saving of Energy (IDAE). IDAE is a public entity of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition, currently in charge of the Low-Carbon Economy pillar of the Operational Program for Sustainable Growth of the Spanish government.
